For the past 5 months, The Philly DoGooder Awards have been working to shine a light on the innovative ways nonprofits tell their stories.

Beginning with a video hackathon in November, Here’s My Chance — a socially-minded marketing agency — paired 25 volunteer filmmakers with 25 nonprofits to create 2-minute films telling organizations’ stories as part of Philly’s first-ever local version of the national awards.

In January, participants were invited to a MLK Day of Service event, which allowed skilled volunteers to apply their expertise in core business skills as consultants to help organizations scope projects. The assessment leveraged pro-bono resources to address the needs and strengthen the infrastructures of the twelve involved nonprofits.

As part of a partnership between Generocity and United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, each of the five prize winners will be matched with a corporation to help fulfill the project they came up with on MLK Day.

Working Film Establishment receive the award for overall winner, Mayor Nutter presents final awards for innovation in Philadelphia.

And the award goes to…
At the awards ceremony, hosts Kenneth Moton and Melissa Magee of 6abc joined presenters from United Way, Philly in Focus, and Wells Fargo in welcoming the crowd at the University of the Arts’ Hamilton Hall.

Over 90 nonprofits competed in the awards, vying for $250,000 worth of resources. The grand prize will be divvied up between five winning organizations ($50,000 each), for each of the following awards: Overall winner, hackathon winner, and the top three viewer-selected films.

  • Viewer’s Choice: New Leash on Life, Diversified Community Services, and Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Association
  • Overall Winner: Working Film Establishment

Mayor Nutter made the final presentations for innovation in Philadelphia:

Emerging leaders were also honored, including: Matt Joyce (GreenLight Philadelphia), Michelle Freeman (Flying Kite Media), Erica Hawthorne (Small But Mighty Arts), Christopher Norris (Techbook Online Corp), and Anna Aagenes (GO! Athletes).
