New Leash on Life USA is a non-profit organization that gives prison inmates the chance to train and take care of kill shelter dogs that may have been euthanized otherwise.
Organization leaders say they give a second chance to the inmates as well as their four-legged companions.
Officials say many dogs that went through the program have gone onto loving homes with families on the outside.
The rescue dogs live with their “inmate trainer” 24/7 as they prepare the dogs to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen tests. Each dog must master commands like sit, stay, come, heel and more.
Leash on Life members say the inmates in the program attend workshops on how to treat the animals are given internship opportunities at animal organizations in the community.
Right now the program is based in Pennsylvania.
On the organization’s website, families can find dogs who are ready to be adopted.
